STORIES AND GUIDES

Safari Planning Advice From The Field

Practical safari planning advice written by our guides and consultants on the ground in Kenya and Tanzania. Read up on wildebeest migration timing, park entry fees, what to pack for a game drive and how to budget a first safari without cutting the parts that matter.

TWO COUNTRIES, ONE JOURNEY

Kenya and Tanzania Combined: One Route, Two Ecosystems

The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are one grassland split by a border. Booking them as a single Kenya and Tanzania safari gives you the whole wildebeest migration circuit instead of half of it, and it puts the Ngorongoro Crater within reach on the same trip. Most travellers fly Nairobi to Kilimanjaro or cross by road at Isebania, then work south through the Serengeti.

Kenya

Best window: July to October for the Mara river crossings, January to March for calving season in Amboseli and the Rift Valley lakes.

Signature parks: Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Samburu and Tsavo.

Why start here: shorter transfers, private conservancies that allow night drives and walking, and Nairobi as an easy arrival point.

Tanzania

Best window: June to October in the northern Serengeti, December to March on the southern plains for calving.

Signature parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Kilimanjaro.

Why add it: far larger open plains, the crater floor in a single morning, and the option to finish on Zanzibar.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

What Actually Determines Your Kenya or Tanzania Safari Experience

Price is rarely what decides whether a safari is good. Six things shape what you actually see on a game drive and how comfortable you are while seeing it. Get these right and a mid-range trip will beat a poorly planned luxury one.

Timing and Season

The migration moves all year. Arriving in the right month for the right park matters more than any other single decision, and it also sets what you pay for beds.

Park or Conservancy

National reserves hold the big herds. Private conservancies cap vehicle numbers and allow night drives and walking safaris that the reserves do not.

Vehicle and Group Size

A window seat is not guaranteed in a shared van. A private four wheel drive with a pop-up roof and six seats changes every sighting you get.

Your Guide

A guide who reads tracks and knows the resident prides finds animals other vehicles drive straight past. This is the biggest single variable in what you see.

Where You Sleep

A camp inside the park puts you at the gate at first light. A lodge an hour outside costs you the best two hours of every day.

How Fast You Move

Three parks in five days is mostly driving. Fewer parks with two nights each buys you full mornings in the field instead of transfers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions Travellers Ask Before Booking

Book three to six months ahead for the July to October migration season, when the best Masai Mara camps sell out first. Green season safaris between April and June can often be arranged at four to six weeks notice, usually at noticeably lower rates.

Yes. Kenya is one of Africa’s most established safari destinations. We use TRA licensed vehicles, guides trained in safety and first aid, and vetted camps inside or bordering the national reserves. Our drivers stay in radio contact throughout every game drive.

Every Sola Safari package includes airport transfers, park and conservancy entry fees, game drives in a private four wheel drive with a pop-up roof, accommodation and most meals. International flights, visas and travel insurance are quoted separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

A mid range Kenya safari runs roughly USD 250 to USD 400 per person per day, covering a private vehicle, driver guide, park fees and full board. Budget camping trips start below that and luxury conservancy camps run well above it.

The wildebeest migration reaches the Masai Mara between July and October, with the Mara River crossings usually at their peak in August and September. Calving season on the southern Serengeti plains runs from January to March.

Yes, and it is our most requested route. A combined Kenya and Tanzania safari links the Masai Mara with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, crossing by road at Isebania or flying Nairobi to Kilimanjaro. Allow at least seven days to do both properly.
